Movie Review: Mamma Mia

I won't go on and on and on about how good this movie is although it really is. Its almost exactly like the live theater show, loved it. Ignore what critics say about how weak the plot is, they said that about the musical and its still packing the theaters night after night around the globe. ABBA's music is timeless.

If you've ever liked any of ABBA's songs you owe it to yourself to watch this show.

This one's a 5/5 for all ABBA lovers.

Game Review; Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard

Its been a while since I bought a new DS game. I'll admit its not exactly my game hardware of choice. but I heard about this game called Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard.

What's the main draw for this game? Its not for the common gamer. This is an old school RPG where you have to draw and keep track of your own maps. anyone out there's who's played Might and Magic 1 & 2, or Bard's Tale will know exactly what I'm taking about. This game even plays like those 2 classic game series.

Oh and this game is not easy for beginners, expect to die quite a few time until your characters get to level 4. Its just part and parcel of old school RPG's. For all hardcore RPG fans, this is a must buy.

Be warned though, it is still a Japanese RPG so despite the old school gameplay, things like powers and items are still very Japanese rpg style.

I'm only at level 3 of the Tower and about 12 hours into the game so far, and I think there are 30+ levels in all, still loving it.

3 Movie Reviews

Finally catching up with all the movies I've seen. I saw WALL-E last week and this past weekend I saw Journey to the Center of the Earth and Hellboy 2.

WALL-E

Its a Pixar movie. That in itself should say it all. Me and just about everyone who's seen this movie loves WALL-E. Its up there with the Incredibles and Finding Nemo, both of which I consider their best shows to date.

My only criticism is that I think Kung Fu Panda actually trumps WALL-E. and that's not exactly a criticism, only that if WALL-E is a 5/5, then Kung Fu Panda is a 5.5/5 :) Both amazing animations and a must buy when the DVD's come out.

No surprise, I give it a 5/5

Journey to the Center of the Earth

I like Brendan Fraser and I can't wait for The Mummy 3. I also loved the original "Journey to the Center of the Earth" movie and book. But this show missed the mark on so many areas.

I know its supposed to be "kid-friendly" but the plot line was weak, making Brendan into a "geek" was plain dumb. He will never pass for a geek and it didn't fit into his character. Also, some things were just unbelivable. They were stuck in the center of the earth and the temp was over 100 degrees and yet none of them had any sweat on them.

The only bright side to the movie is that Brendan's and Josh Hutcherson's acting saved the movie from being a total wreck.

Over all the best I can say is that this is a DVD rental. I give this a 3/5.

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army

Ahhhh... I've saved the best for last. They FINALLY made a Hellboy 2, if you've not seen the original Hellboy, I highly recommend it. And Hellboy 2 is one of those few sequals that surpasses the original. All the original characters are back and there are a few more fun characters thrown in for more fun.

Also the director Guillermo del Toro was the director for Pan's Labyrinth. So be assured that there are wierd creatures galore in this movie.

Oh and I did have one major gripe with the show, David Hyde Pierce voiced the original Abe, but this time it was some British sounding guy. I'm sorry but David Hyde Pierce's voice is very distinctive and fit Abe perfectly. I spent about 30+ mins fuming about this which did distract from my enjoyment of the show.

Finally, I discovered a new actor to watch for. Luke Goss is spectacular as the evil "mis-understood" Elf Prince.

This one rates a 5/5.

Weekend Cooking

Yep, I made corned beef and cabbage again. But this time I made it in a crockpot. Super easy. Just dump everything in the pot overnight and its ready to eat when you wake up. I also made Green Bean casserole. Another easy dish, green beans, can of campbells mushroom soup, some milk and back for 45mins. This was yummy.

Here we have my attempt at japanese egg custard. Also called Chawanmushi. I followed this recipe. I didn't have any dashi soup stock so I used miso soup paste and didn't use quite enough water. The result? It was not very good. Actually I just ate the mushrooms and threw most of the egg custard away.

I love Chawanmushi but the making of it still eludes me.

Happy 4th of July

Its the 4th of July here in America, Independence Day. to me its essentially another holiday which is always good. Its especially great cos I'm been away from home for 2 weeks and its great to be in my own comfy bed again.

Instead of a post with stars and stripes, I decided to post several funny videos of commercials. Because we can always use more laughter in our lives.
