But even better is that this year they put in a whole bunch of awesome fun items. As you can see from the picture below, Astir (My Priest) is literally on FIRE!!! Thanks to the Sandals and Vestments of Summer.

WOW Adventures

Since I spend so much time on World of Warcraft, I might as well blog about it.

Here we see my mage Isale finally getting his Epic land mount.

And here Astir replaces her old staff with Bloodfire Greatstaff from Black Morass. Granted its no where near the best staff, but considering that I'm a healing priest, this staff is part of my solo gear.

Back with World of Warcraft

Well its been a really slow summer. There have been almost no game of interest released and so after a 3 month break I'm back in World of Warcraft again.
Despite all its shortcomings I have to admit that Blizzard's jewel really is fun. And with the introduction of "Daily Quests", which can only be done once a day with fairly significant gain, there's a compelling reason to login for about 1-2 hours then have that sense of achievement.

Here are some screen shots of my adventures in Outland. Astir becomes Queen of the Ogres, she indulges in Nether Ray wrangling, and works towards getting an epic swift mount.

The new expansion, Wraith of the Witch King can't come soon enough.

Time to Depart WOW

I've been playing World of Warcraft (WOW) since (Nov 2004) when it first came out, and I've had a blast. Never before have I had a game that has held my attention for well over a year. But as was bound to happen, I finally cancelled my account 2 weeks ago.

For all of WOW's achievements, there are a few things that they do very wrong.

1. The first is Burning Crusade.
Now don't get me wrong, Burning Crusade is an excellent expansion and I'll be the first to admit that its awesome. But it got the end game completely wrong. In the original WOW, once you hit level 60, the end-game content was raiding. Molten Core, Black Wing Lair etc. Raiding is fun the first few time you try it, but after that it becomes something of a job. You can't raid alone, you need a guild of about 40 people (pre-BC). Also, you can't expect to complete an end game instance in 1 weekend. It takes guilds months of weekly raids to learn, gear up and eventually complete an end-game instance. But the benefits were worth it. You got bragging rights, and tons of very cool gear for everyone.

Post-BC, raiding is still the end-game. But now things are different. In order to even enter the end-game instance of The Black Temple, you literally have to complete countless raids in no less than about 8 instances to build up your reputation with over 6 different factions. I won't go into detail but they literally drew flow charts to show you the progression for The Black Temple. That's not fun, that's a 2nd job. Now this in itself should not have mattered since countless gamers had been doing this very thing pre-BC. But here the rules have changed yet again.

The number of persons in a raid dropped from 40 to 10/25. Now organizing a guild is no easy task, reorganization of a guild is a nightmare of significant proportions. The end result is many guilds were disbanded or went through very unpleasant reorganizations. An added unpleasantness was that the difficulty of the encounters increased fairly significantly. With fewer people, everyone now has to carry more of a burden. They have to be better prepared and the margin for error is reduced. The result here is higher repair costs, more time spent preparing for these raids, and more trips from the graveyard.

Finally, the worst transgression post-BC is the loot. Now if you have a good enough incentive, you can literally get anyone to do anything. Sadly the end-game loot post-BC is lacking. Sadly sadly lacking given the effort of raiding. Now, Blizzard did upgrade all end-game items 2 weeks ago in patch 2.10, but even after that I was left very unimpressed, at least from the perspective of a Priest.

2. Development of new content
I love that Blizzard's products are very polished. There is no other gaming company that get's how important this is and get's it right every time. Let's take for example Lord of the Rings Online and Everquest 2. I tried both these games recently and while I will admit that they have their strong points, They were not as polished. This word ... "Polish" is almost an X factor. Many people in the gaming industry have started spouting how important it is, but I'm not sure everyone understands what it is.

To me, its attention to every aspect of your game. For example, movement. I'm one of the 10-20% of the population that get's motion sickness after playing FPS's and sometimes MMORPG's. But I never had an issue with WOW. Not a single time. Playing Everquest2 however, I encountered this after playing extended periods (over an hour) and Lord of the Rings Online while slightly better still made me feel queasy. Other examples I can give are WOW's extremely customizable interface which is not reflected in either LotRO or EQ2.

Regardless, this polish that is delivered with every Blizzard game seems to be a hindrance in MMORPG's. I'm paying a monthly fee to play and support a game that gives a content update only once every 3-6 months? And only releases expansions once every 2 years? I know that Blizzard made mention of releasing a new expansion every year, but it is now June 2007. Do you truly believe that Blizzard will release the next expansion for WOW in Jan 2008? Especially since they have not even announced the name of the expansion. I think that June 2008 is a more likely release date for the expansion, possibly later.

To be fair to Blizzard, my gaming style is not typical. I leveled to 70 in the first 8-9 days of the release of Burning Crusade. And it took me 3 months to reach level 60 in Jan 2005, this was before the days of hitting level 60 in a week guides were released. So my constant search for new content works against me, but I think that waiting over 3 months for new content and 2 years for an expansion is simply too long.

3. Replay ability
There are many individuals out there who have 2 or even 6 alts and all of them are at the level cap. I envy these individuals their ability to grind alts. Personally I've have 2 characters in outlands at 70 and 65, a Priest and a Mage respectively. My other alts are stuck at 30's - 50's.

The reason being that from level 25-55, you are forced to grind/quest the same zones over and over. Eastern and Western Plaguelands, Burning Steppes, Blasted Lands, Un'Goro Crater, Winterspring, Silithus, and Tanaris to name a few. Is anyone sick of these zones? I know I am.

Despite all of Blizzard's faults, and WOW's current age of 2 3/4 years, it still has an appeal that no MMORPG released recently can touch. And I'm sure I'll fire WOW up again eventually and certainly when the next expansion is released. But till then I've been signing up for the numerous beta's currently flooding the web for the next big MMO. And till then, I'm dusting off my PS2 and playing Disgaea 2.

Thanks for listening to me rant, and happy gaming.

PS. I should also mention that the straw that broke the camel's back for me was my guild which existed since WOW's beta imploded leaving me flapping in the wind. On the bright side, I now seem to have loads of time in the evenings to read the 20 or more books that have piled up in the past 2 years.

PPS. Here's another Game blogger who shares similar feelings about WOW. His post in entitled Why TBC Killed End-Game WoW for Me and a Plea to Blizzard. Its a good read.

Burning Crusade Update

Well... as you can guess by the frequency of my blogs lately (or lack there of) I've been busy playing World of Warcraft:The Burning Crusade! Astir, my alter ego in the game is now Level 68 and I'm on target to hit Levl 70 and get my flying mount by Sunday.

After that... I've not decided. There's still a TON of things to do like getting money for an Epic flying mount, or level up my alts, or get keyed up for Karazan or starting a new character using the 2 new races included in this expansion. So much to do, so little time.

A little bit of a vacation from Blogging

Well I know its been a while since I last posted a blog, but World of Warcraft:The Burning Crusade came out on 16th Jan 2007 and I've been doing almost nothing else since. So I'm taking a brief Sunday morning break to post my leveling adventures in the Outlands.
This is Astir hitting Level 61 (of 70) in Pools of Aggonar in Hellfire Peninsula.

Here is Astir hitting level 62 (of 70) after turning in a quest in Honor Hold.

Astir hitting level 63 (of 70) while in Underbog, the 2nd instance in Coilfang.

Astir hitting level 64 (of 70) while killing Withered Giants in Zangramach just last night. (Or rather 3+am this morning)

And finally here's Astir in her new solo gear. Yes she looks very... funky in her multicolored outfit complete with green ankle high pants and a red fedora.

World of Warcraft - Update

This is me with the Best Staff from AQ40, the 2nd hardest dungeon instance in World of Warcraft. I now have ALL the best staffs from the end instances except for Nexxramas. Staff of Dominance from Molten Core, Staff of the Shadow Flame from Black Wing Lair, and now Blessed Qiraji Augur Staff from AQ40. Essentially it means I've spent wayyy too much time playing this game.

Ahhh... but its about to get worse. The expansion to Warcraft comes out on 16th Jan 2007!!! There are about 7.5 million WOW players around the globe and we're all getting the game roughly the same day. So on the 16th and 17th, expect many of your friends/family/colleges who are geeks to be pre-occupied that day or even on vacation.

I'll be taking the 17th - 21st off from work. I figure that since I hardly ever take sick leave and since I've got the vacation days I might as well. This game has occupied and entertained me for 2 years 3 months. So I don't feel too bad about taking another 3 days off work. After all its not like I'm going to be doing anything productive anyway.

Astir gets a new Dress

This has been a great week. Both my characters in Warcraft got new Dresses. Here's Astir modelling her new Robes of the Guardian Saint from AQ40. A very nice upgrade from Mindsurge Robes.

And here's Isale modelling the pink horror from AQ20. I know it looks terrible but this is SUCH an upgrade from my previous green.

Turtles and Tabards and New Pets

Well about 2 weeks ago World of Warcraft (the online game) released a collectable card game of the same name. And 4 days after its release, they completely sold out. Needless to say it was a HUGE hit. Yours truly bought 3 boxes.

Did I think the card game was any good? I've no clue. The reason I and many others bought the cards is because you in addition to the usual rare cards, there are 3 Loot cards which can have a special code that can get you one of 3 things in the computer game. A Turtle Mount, A new pet called the Hippogryph, and a Talbard. These cards are very rare, especially the Turtle Mount. only 1 such card for every 5000 printed (Or 1 card per 13 boxes). Sadly I shelled out for 3 boxes and no Turtle :( Now I'm considering getting one on ebay, but the prices!!! Oi!! Average price of a mount runs about $150-250. And I just can't justify the cost. (Basically I'm cheap) Sigh... but I might bid on the Hippogryph if I can find one for about $60.
Oh and Blizzard was smart on this venture. In addition to the loot cards, each booster pack (15 cards pack) contains a special point card. Essentially a pack costs $3.99 and you also get 100 points. Collect enough points and you get a "free" in game item. I'm also eyeing this, for 25,000 points you get a special item that allows you to become an Ogre!

Some might call spending money on items that don't exist crazy. The way I look at it, some people Travel, some buy shoes and clothes, others even gamble with their money. I play computer games.

10 Man Onyxia Run

This is another World of Warcraft moment. Onyxia (that dead dragon in the background) usually takes 40 people to take down. 10 persons from my guild spent hours of preparation and managed to down her. An amazing achievement!!! Congratz to them!

My 2nd level 60!

People meet Isale, he just achieved level 60 after 2+ years of play! WOOT!!! My second level 60 character on World of Warcraft.

So now I have 2 level 60's. Astir (Priest) and Isale (Mage). Astir is decked out in Tier 2 gear and close to getting Tier 3. Isale is sadly still stuck in his level 40's and 50's gear, although he does have 2 Magister pieces. Still with Burning Crusade coming out that's all gonna change.

And for those of you who didn't understand the paragraphs above, don't bother, just look at the pretty pictures. :)

A Wonderful Sunday

2 things happened that made this a very good Sunday.

First was World of Warcraft. My Guild Shadows Edge finally killed the dragon Neferion! We started doing Black Wing Lair on 12/28/2005 and now on 07/16/2006 we have conquered BWL!!! 7 months of weekend raids have finally paid off. And now we will go on to Nexx.

The Second thing that happened was I finally scored a ticket to Jersey Boys on Aug 10th in NYC!!!! And the best part is that I didn't have to pay for an overinflated price. I got a premium ticket right off Telecharge. Someone must have had to cancel that night. Its still the most I've ever paid for a show but its Jersey Boys!!!!

And now I'm gonna turn in happy. BTW Here are some screenies of Shadows Edge killing Nef.

AE Fun. This is where I LOVE PI and Holy Nova

World of Warcraft - Update

After a long drought of item drops, I managed to nab these 3 beauties in the span of 1 week!!! I'm especially proud of the Shard of the Scale. it took 8 long months but I finally have it. Currently, I'm the only person in my guild who has any of these 3 items.

Oh and for those who play WOW, my guild is currently at Nefarion in Black Wing Lair. We think it should be another... 2-3 weeks till we bring him down. :)
